While you may think that Social Security Disability Insurance is reserved for people who have a physical impairment, injury or disability that inhibits their ability to earn a living, there are some mental disabilities that also qualify for these types of benefits. At McGowan & Cecil, LLC, we understand that filing for SSDI benefits in Maryland can be complicated, and it may be difficult to know whether your mental condition is covered.

According to the Social Security Administration, you may be eligible for SSDI benefits if you have a mental condition or disorder that is listed as a covered impairment. The condition must affect your cognitive ability by making it hard for you to perceive time and place, remember specific details or cause a change in personality. It must also make it difficult for you to perform daily activities, interact with others on a social level or focus on an activity for a period of time.

While there are a number of covered conditions, some of the most common include:

  • Schizophrenia
  • Severe intellectual disability
  • Personality disorders
  • Autisim
  • Affective disorder, such as bipolar, manic syndrome or depressive syndrome
  • Consistent panic attacks or generalized anxiety disorder

Depending on the severity of the case, certain substance addictions may be classified as a mental disorder, and therefore eligible for benefits. When applying for SSDI, it is important to file your application with supporting medical documentation and any other necessary paperwork showing that you have been diagnosed with the condition.
